Welcome to the sixth grade at West Middle School. It is with pleasure and pride that I assist with the education of your child. Given the advantages of an excellent facility and the commitment of our administrative and teaching staff to quality education, I am confident that this will be a positive and constructive year.
To create a consistent procedure from classroom to classroom and support all students with the opportunity to grow as learners, the following guidelines have been developed:
planners/AGENDA SHEET: To assist in better home/school communication, and in the development of student responsibility and organizational skills. students are EXPECTED to record daily class work and homework in the agenda/planner. They are to bring this to every class!
HOMEWORK: Homework assignments are considered to be ON TIME if they are complete and with the student at the beginning of class! If not, the assignment is considered late. If an assignment is incomplete, the student is responsible for attending "Lunch & Learn" until it is done.
ABSEnce: WORK Absent work is not penalized and deadlines are set when the child returns to school. If the absence is illness related, it is the student’s responsibility to get the assignments, either during or after the illness. Likewise, it is the student’s responsibility to return the work within the allotted time.
If the absence is not illness related, i.e. vacation/sports/etc., all work is due the day the student returns, provided the student prearranged (3 days in advance, please) to get their assignments ahead of time. Otherwise, all affected assignments are due the day after the student receives them.
GRADES: Grades are based on a point system; all assignments, quizzes and tests have an assigned point value. Marking period grades will be based on the percentage of points earned out of total points possible. Please see the Rochester School’s grading scale for grades/percents.
MATERIALS: Students must come to class prepared! They will ALWAYS NEED TO BRING aN INDEPENDENT READING BOOK, PAPER, WRITING tools, LA6 BINDER AND COMPLETED HOMEWORK (IN 6TH GRADE HW FOLDER) TO CLASS EVERYDAY! Any additional materials required for class will be announced prior to the next class.
BEHAVIOR:Student conduct should reflect “w.i.s.e. West Ways” principles and be a "Wise Warrior"! Behavior choices that cultivate a safe and productive learning environment will be reinforced and anything less will be dealt with as easy as 1 (REMINDER), 2 (hallway behavior slip), and 3 (trip to office and email to parents)!
IN CONCLUSION… I feel these guidelines, along with the policies in the Student Handbook, will help maintain a positive and healthy learning environment for all.
I appreciate your cooperation and look forward to a fabulous year! If you have any questions, please feel free to email me [email protected] or call 248-726-5000 (ext. 6377). I have found that email is the quickest and most efficient way to get a hold of me. I will be available during 5th hour and before/after school to support any student needs or concerns!
